You donâ??t have to hang up your soccer cleats or trade in your tennis racket when your school days are over. By choosing a career in a sports-related field you can stay in the game indefinitely.

People who love athletics can work in areas as diverse as medicine, management, marketing, manufacturing and many other sports-occupational areas. Prospects are increasing as more people play and watch sports. With the explosion of sports for women and girls, entire industries have sprung up, such as womenâ??s clothing and equipment. In other careers–like sports journalism and sports administration and sports training–opportunities for women to participate in previously male-dominated have, if not leveled the playing field, at least greatly expanded it.

There are over six million jobs in sports-related careers, according to Donna Lopiano, executive director of the Womenâ??s Sports Foundation. While many of these jobs take special education and training, entry-level positions exist for young men and women willing to work their way up.

Careers in sports take many forms. While many young athletes dream of making it to the professional ranks, the reality is that very few make it that far. In other sports-related careers the news is more encouraging. From educators to architects, facilities managers to fitness instructors, physical therapists to professional athletes, there are positions to fill.

Below is a sample of jobs with suggested education and/or training requirements for breaking into the field.

Sports Journalist

Sports journalists report on the news of the sports world to the public. A four-year degree in journalism and/or equivalent writing experience is recommended. Job opportunities exist in newspapers and magazines, radio, and television. Most beginning journalists begin as interns on college newspapers, radio, or television stations or as general reporters on small-town newspapers. Curiosity, writing, and interviewing skills and the ability to work within deadlines are characteristics of successful journalists.

College Coach

College and university coaches are responsible for getting athletic teams ready to play in competition. In smaller colleges they may coach several sports, while in larger institutions they are mainly responsible for just one team. Duties include recruiting players, developing game strategies, and teaching skills. Most college coaching positions require a minimum of four years of college. A typical career path might begin as an athlete, followed by becoming an assistant coach at the high school or college level.

Exercise Physiologist

An exercise physiologist studies how the stress of exercise affects the body. The most common areas in which exercise physiologists work are prevention–teaching healthy lifestyle habits–and rehabilitation–helping to restore function following an accident or debilitating illness. They may manage a wellness center, teach, or conduct research. Most jobs require a minimum of a masterâ??s degree with an expertise in exercise physiology

Sports Agent

A sports agent acts as a professional athleteâ??s representative in negotiating contracts, salaries, endorsements, and other business arrangements. Education includes a four-year college degree in business or a related major, often followed by a law degree. Negotiating skills, sales ability, and ability to work under stressful conditions are all traits of the successful sports agent.

Sports Official

A sports official is the field-of-play arbitrator of rules at an athletic event. The ability to make instantaneous decisions, resolve conflicts, and deal with stress and pressure, as well as the fitness level to keep up with the game are keys to success in this field. Men and women are needed to officiate in every sport and at every level from youth to professional leagues. Most people start by studying the rules of the sport and attending clinics, followed by officiating at youth and recreational levels. From there, dedicated officials can advance into high school and college sports. Officiating at the professional level is like playing in the prosâ??only a very few of the finest, most ambitious make it.

The areas with the most opportunities during the next five years are estimated to be new business development, sports apparel, internet marketing, coaching and athletic administration, and officiating.

Tips to getting started in a sports career:

â?¢ Assess your skills and determine how to translate them into a career in sports.

â?¢ Set goals. Think about what interests you and what you have to offer. Career planning is a process.

â?¢ Seek the advice of guidance counselors and do career research to create an educational program to fit your needs.

â?¢ Follow the educational or training plan youâ??ve developed.

â?¢ Get experience. Internships, work-study, part-time and summer jobs, and volunteering can help you prepare for a career and allow employers to assess your talents.

â?¢ Enter the job market, looking for entry-level positions or jobs that match your experience and that can be paths to your career goal.

â?¢ Network. Join professional organizations, attend conferences, volunteer for leadership positions. Seek a mentorâ??someone who can assist you on your career path.

While itâ??s not enough just to love a particular sport or sports in general, your passion can help you chose a career that combines business and pleasure.

Has the economy got you down in the dumps? 

Is the sales prospect who seemed so excited about your product last month stalling this month? Did that big account you’ve been trying to nail in another company tell you they love your product, but want you to cut your price in half?  And, when you called the buyer you usually deal with at third company, did you get a recording saying, “The number you dialed is no longer in service.”  And, now, you’ve just heard that your biggest customer is going to start using an overseas company to do the work they had been outsourcing to you.

Running a business is never a sure bet, but in today’s economy it sure can feel like you’re caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place. What can you do when things get tough? How can you get ahead when your business is beginning to make you think of a bus emptying out on the last run of the day? Here are several strategies to consider:

Reinvent your business
You don’t have to be a venture-backed high-tech company to reassess your business model. In fact, the smaller and leaner your business already is, the faster you can shift gears and zoom back into action.

Sit back and take a cold, hard look at your strengths and weaknesses and possible markets. Advertisers may be staying away from your web site in droves, but could corporations use the databases you’ve developed or your technology? If you’ve been selling products online, could they sell offline, too? If you’re not selling online, why aren’t you?

Do you need to develop new products or services? Don’t guess at what customers want and will pay for. Analyze your existing sales and talk to living, breathing prospects. What do they need? What can you provide? What’s the best way to deliver solutions to them? What’s going to bring in the most profit?

Put it all down in black and white and look at the numbers. What are the easiest ways to make the most profit quickly? What should you be doing on a longer term basis to ensure your business continues to grow and prosper? Revise your business plan based on your answers, then start to work your plan.

Contact former customers
Don’t assume that a customer who stopped buying from you in the past will never buy from you again. Customers’ needs and circumstances change, just as yours do. The megacorporation that didn’t renew your contract a couple of years ago because of changing business priorities may have changed their direction once again and be a good prospect now. The customer who went with a lower-priced competitor may be dissatisfied with the quality or service and be receptive to a call from you today. Or, the manager who had given the work to his best friend may no longer be with the company.

Contact competitors of present or former customers
If a company needs what you sell, there’s a good chance their competitors do too. Industry groups you belong to, trade shows, seminars, and friends in the industry can all help you identify likely prospects. If the people you meet don’t need your services, ask if they can put you in touch with someone at their company who could.

Call former prospects
The bigger a business, the slower they are to move. The project that was put on indefinite hold last summer, may become urgent this spring. Or, some other project the company is working on may be right up your alley. So touch base periodically. The more recently you’ve contacted a client, the more likely they’ll be to remember your name – and your phone number – when they are ready to buy.

Sell additional products and services to existing customers
Often the easiest way to bring in new business is to sell more to your existing customers. You may be ale to sell more of the same product to the same contact, or sell the same product to a different division of the company. Or, you may be able to sell related products and services to the customer. Keep your eyes and ears open for new opportunities and be sure your customers are aware of all of your capabilities.

Work your Rolodex®
Labor statistics show people entering the workforce today are likely to change jobs seven to 10 times in their careers. You can position yourself for new sales just by keeping in touch with people as they change jobs. The human resources manager who hired you to do a harassment awareness training program for Company A, may need to find someone to put on the same kind of seminar at Company B. Thus, if a contact at a client company tells you they are leaving the company, ask them for new contact information.

Team up with other vendors for joint sales
Recommendations and referrals are among the leading sources of new business for small businesses. An easy way to get more referrals is to team up with other businesses who sell to the same market but don’t directly compete with you. Agree to refer business to one another and link to each others’ web sites. Look at possibilities for joint sales, as well. Doing so may allow you to bid on and win bigger projects than either of you could on your own.

Develop multiple revenue streams
That’s corporate speak for a concept that’s as old as the hills: find more ways to make money. For instance, if you are a web “content” writer whose market is drying up, hone your skills to write for offline publications, business brochures or technical manuals. Or, learn to do web design and desktop publishing and add those services to the writing services you offer customers. Other types of businesses might consider licensing intellectual property, selling advertising space in their catalog, renting direct mail lists, or performing services for other companies that they’ve developed for their own use.

While you are determining the subject of your online business, write down ten words or phrases that people would use to search for items and information related to your business. Blogs do not require you to know any specialized computer language to get started. If you can type, you can use a blog. It is very simple.

But the next step is the hard part; getting people to visit your site. This is where most businesses fail. In order to bring sustainable traffic to your site you should use several different sources. Many people write articles to bring in traffic. This technique is free and works well if you can write at least one article a day. Posting on large Forums can also be an effective free technique to bring in traffic.  And finally, using ads can be effective, but this tactic will cost you some money. Regardless of which traffic building techniques you decide on, you must do it consistently.

It is not uncommon to see consumers comparing prices and reading reviews on the Internet before coming to a buying decision. They can compare prices for physical products such as automobiles, hand phones, MP3 players, or they can compare prices for non-physical items such as car insurance, credit card interest rates, and more. As prices become transparent on the Internet, it is critical for businesses to maintain competitive prices so as to stay profitable. For instance, anyone can just visit a trade lead directory and locate partners from different countries that supply similar products. They may then compare prices and select the best possible deal. As mentioned earlier, it is crucial for businesses these days to keep their prices low so as not to lose favor with their customers. To do so, they have to achieve economies of scale. That means buying in volume to bring the prices down. Volume here becomes of vital importance. To own a certain segment of the market, they must sell as much as they can. Hence, the need to consider the global market – for what can be bigger than the global market?

In order to acquire customers from other countries, businesses are again turning to the Internet. They can list their business contact information on trade lead business directories, and allow targeted leads to contact them through these websites. Usually, a lead directory will allow the business to list their email contact information and their corporate website URL. Addresses and phone numbers can be listed too, but these are optional.

Once listed on a trade directory, other businesses interested to make contact can choose to email the business owner or visit their website directly. They may make contact to ask for quotations, or simply submit a product enquiry. However, note that the listing will expire after a certain period of time.

Even though listing a company in a trade directory means paying a small listing fee, this fee is often much cheaper compared to traditional print advertising. Advertising in international trade magazines may cost up to thousands of dollars. Sometimes, the leads acquired from these advertising channels do not even lead to actual sales orders.

As you can see, the benefits offered by trade directories are tremendous. You can minimize risk by buying a listing for a small fee, and be able to immediately tap into the global market. When such business networking activities are pursued actively online, business owners have a much higher chance of enjoying greater economies of scale, and thus enjoy more handsome profits.
